Gurit showcases composite sections of the new London bus at Busworld 2013, Belgium

17th October 2013, Zurich, Gurit (SIX Swiss Exchange : GUR),  a leading global manufacturer and supplier of composite materials, engineering, tooling, finished parts and systems will be exhibiting at the Busworld event in Kortrijk, Belgium from 18-23 October. Exhibiting on stand 816D, Gurit will feature a full scale section of the bus rear end produced using Gurit’s advanced composite materials.

The New Bus for London Project

Gurit worked in a joint development team with the structural engineers of the main manufacturer Wrightbus to develop the overall laminate design and connection details to the steel chassis and aluminium body side and roof panels. Gurit provided material properties, allowable stresses and guidance on the modelling of composites to allow Wrightbus engineers to develop the composite design and integrate it into their existing Finite Element Model of the bus.

The ‘New Bus For London’ (NBfL) project uses Gurit’s SPRINT™ ST 70FR and Corecell™ M-Foam. The five structural composite parts which make up the rear end of the bus, support the weight of the engine, the passengers on the platform, the staircase and the upper deck. Using these composite materials has resulted in the saving of several hundred kilograms from the structural weight of the bus, compared to traditional materials.

Gurit manufactured the prototype parts for durability and fatigue testing and has now moved into series production.

Comprehensive composite engineering experience

Staff will be present on the stand to discuss Gurit’s global capabilities in design, engineering, materials science, prototyping and manufacturing for the Bus transport industry.  To find out more visit stand 816D.
